Types of Health Measures & Formulas

Body weight, heart health, blood sugar, cholesterol and physical function: here is what the key health measures mean and how results are judged, all on one page.

⚖ 1. Body Weight Measures

BMI Body Mass Index

The most basic measure for checking weight. The ranges below are the Korean (Asian) standard, which is lower than the Western one.

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²
ResultBMI range (Korean standard)
🔵 UnderweightUnder 18.5
🟢 Normal18.5 ~ 22.9
🟡 Overweight23 ~ 24.9
🔴 Obese25 or higher

WHR Waist-Hip Ratio

A measure that shows whether you carry extra fat around the belly.

WHR = waist ÷ hips
SexNormalBelly fat (abdominal obesity)
👨 MenUnder 0.900.90 or higher
👩 WomenUnder 0.850.85 or higher

💓 2. Heart Health Measures

BP Blood Pressure

Measured as systolic (top) / diastolic (bottom) pressure in mmHg. Example: 120/80 mmHg. The categories below are the ones used in Korea.

CategorySystolicDiastolic
🟢 NormalUnder 120Under 80
🟡 Elevated120 ~ 129Under 80
🟡 Prehypertension130 ~ 13980 ~ 89
🔴 High blood pressure140 or higher90 or higher

HR Pulse (Heart Rate)

The number of heartbeats per minute, measured while you are at rest.

CategoryRange
🟡 Slow (bradycardia)Under 60 beats/min
🟢 Normal60 ~ 100 beats/min
🟡 Fast (tachycardia)Over 100 beats/min

🍬 3. Blood Sugar (Diabetes) Measures

FG Fasting Blood Sugar (Fasting Glucose)

Your blood sugar level, measured after not eating for 8 hours or more.

ResultRange (mg/dL)
🟢 Normal70 ~ 99
🟡 Impaired fasting glucose100 ~ 125
🔴 Diabetes126 or higher
HbA1c HbA1c (Glycated Hemoglobin)

A measure that reflects your average blood sugar over the past 2~3 months.

Average blood sugar (eAG) = 28.7 × HbA1c − 46.7
ResultHbA1c (%)
🟢 NormalUnder 5.7%
🟡 Prediabetes5.7 ~ 6.4%
🔴 Diabetes6.5% or higher

🪨 4. Cholesterol Measures

CHOL Cholesterol Levels (mg/dL)
ItemNormalCaution / risk
Total cholesterol 200 or lower 🔴 240 or higher: risk 🔴
LDL ("bad" cholesterol) 100 or lower: good 🔴 160 or higher: risk 🔴
HDL ("good" cholesterol) 60 or higher: good 🔴 Under 40: risk 🔴
Triglycerides (TG) 150 or lower: normal 🔴 200 or higher: risk 🔴
💡 For heart health, lower LDL is better and higher HDL is better. If your triglycerides are high, cut back on alcohol and sugar.

🔥 5. Physical Function Measures

BMR Basal Metabolic Rate

The minimum energy your body needs each day just to stay alive, even when you do nothing at all.

Men: 10×weight (kg) + 6.25×height (cm) − 5×age + 5
Women: 10×weight (kg) + 6.25×height (cm) − 5×age − 161
🚀 Go to the BMR Calculator
BF% Body Fat Percentage (Body Fat %)

The share of your body weight that is fat. (Deurenberg formula)

Body fat % = 1.20×BMI + 0.23×age − 10.8×sex − 5.4
※ Sex: man = 1, woman = 0
CategoryMenWomen

🦸 6. Key Measures for Older Adults

These are especially important when it comes to health in later life.

💪
Grip Strength (muscle strength)
Measured with a hand grip meter. Under 26 kg for men or under 18 kg for women suggests possible sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss). It is linked to falls and death rates.
🚶
Walking Speed (4 m walk test)
Time how long it takes to walk 4 m. Under 0.8 m/s means a risk of sarcopenia. It is a strong warning sign for falls and hospital stays.
⚠
Fall Risk
Checked with tests such as standing on one leg (10 seconds or more) and standing up from a chair (how many times in 30 seconds). Each year, 1 in 3 people aged 65 and older has a fall.
🧠
Memory and Thinking Tests
MMSE (out of 30; under 24 suggests a possible problem), MoCA (out of 30; under 26 suggests possible mild cognitive impairment). Regular testing is recommended.
🍇
Nutrition (BMI + how much you eat)
A BMI under 18.5 means a risk of undernutrition. A daily protein intake of 1.0~1.2 g per kg of body weight is recommended. If you lose your appetite or lose weight, talk with your doctor.
